F/L W.M. Middleton, Chatham, Ont., officer Commanding 6 Datachment of the RCAF's 413 aerial Photo squadron is shown making a final check of his mitchell aircraft before taken off from Rockcliffe Aerodrome Thursday (May 13) for Goose Bay on the first leg of their photographic operations. The detachment, which carries personnel and equipment enough to make it self-sustaining, expects to cover over 148,000 square miles of Canada's north-eastern frontiers with tri-camera photography and 20,000 square miles with vertical photography from bases at Goose and Fort Chimo on Ungava Bay.

The RCAF's two photo squadrons, 413 and 414, carry out annual photographic operations covering the Dominion, and the pictures their far-ranging planes take are processed at Rockcliffe's No.1 Photo Establishment, in which ther scene above was taken. The above picture shows a mosaic, made up of hundreds of individual aerial photos laid together. When re-photographed a single picture covering a huge area results. AERIA1 photos taken by the RCAF are turned over to Mines and Resources, Army. and other government departments for mapping and other purposes. Note: this is an old picture, and unfortunately shows WD's no longer in the Air Force. - Possibly it could be cropped to excluse them.

Taken looking up-glacier with Steve Miller, of the Stanford Research Institute, preparing the equipment for taking a record. This picture shows the general character of the ice surface over which most of the measurements were made on lower glacier and where ice thicknesses in excess of 1000 feet were obtained. This work was sponsored by the American Geographical Society and Camp No. 12 of their Juneau Ice Research Project was on the highest portion of the low peak to the extreme right. Two icefalls show in the picture, one extending from left of center of the picture and continuing to the extreme right, and the other showing to the left of center of the picture in the background. - The top surface of the ice at this point is 950 feet above sea level and the ice extends to more than 150 feet below sea level.
