It was an RCAF photo survey crew, flying in the canadian -built photo-graphic Lancaster pictured above, It was an RCAF photo survey crew, flying in the canadian -built photo-graphic Lancaster pictured above, that added more than 5000 square miles to the map of Canada this summer by discovery of two previously uncharted islands in Foxe Basin, north of Hudson Bay on the west coast of Baffin Island. Larger of the two islands is between two and three times the size of Prince Edward Island. The Lancaster, with a companion plane, both from 413 Squadron, Rockcliffe, photographed all the Baffin Island AINA-49-16

This picture shows the general character of the ice surface over which most of the measurements were made on lower glacier and where ice thicknesses in excess of 1000 feet were obtained. This work was sponsored by the American Geographical Society and Camp No. 12 of their Juneau Ice Research Project was on the highest portion of the low peak to the extreme right. Two icefalls show in the picture, one extending from left of center of the picture and continuing to the extreme right, and the other showing to the left of center of the picture in the background. - The top surface of the ice at this point is 950 feet above sea level and the ice extends to more than 150 feet below sea level.
