It was an RCAF photo survey crew, flying in the canadian -built photo-graphic Lancaster pictured above, that added more than 5000 square miles to the map of Canada this summer by discovery of two previously uncharted islands in Foxe Basin, north of Hudson Bay on the west coast of Baffin Island. Larger of the two islands is between two and three times the size of Prince Edward Island. The Lancaster, with a companion plane, both from 413 Squadron, Rockcliffe, photographed all the Baffin Island

Middleton, Chatham, Ont., officer Commanding 6 Datachment of the RCAF's 413 aerial Photo squadron is shown making a final check of his mitchell aircraft before taken off from Rockcliffe Aerodrome Thursday (May 13) for Goose Bay on the first leg of their photographic operations. The detachment, which carries personnel and equipment enough to make it self-sustaining, expects to cover over 148,000 square miles of Canada's north-eastern frontiers with tri-camera photography and 20,000 square miles with vertical photography from bases at Goose and Fort Chimo on Ungava Bay.
