It was an RCAF photo survey crew, flying in the canadian -built photo-graphic Lancaster pictured above, It was an RCAF photo survey crew, flying in the canadian -built photo-graphic Lancaster pictured above, that added more than 5000 square miles to the map of Canada this summer by discovery of two previously uncharted islands in Foxe Basin, north of Hudson Bay on the west coast of Baffin Island. Larger of the two islands is between two and three times the size of Prince Edward Island. The Lancaster, with a companion plane, both from 413 Squadron, Rockcliffe, photographed all the Baffin Island AINA-49-16

The above picture shows a mosaic, made up of hundreds of individual aerial photos laid together. When re-photographed a single picture covering a huge area results. AERIA1 photos taken by the RCAF are turned over to Mines and Resources, Army. and other government departments for mapping and other purposes. Note: this is an old picture, and unfortunately shows WD's no longer in the Air Force. - Possibly it could be cropped to excluse them. AINA-49-14

Shown above are just a few of the negative rolls which represent thousands of flying hours and painstaking aerial photographic work by the RCAF, and which are playing a big part in developing our natural resources and pushing back our northern frontiers. The aerial pictures are used by the Department of Mines and Resources and other government departments, as well as by the Army, for mapping. In addition, many commercial uses are made of the photos.
