DescriptionThis rug has a figured centrefield and borders. The centrefield has a dark blue ground and has a row of flowers and tiny trees surrounding it. The lower end is embellished with a tan platform on which are arranged two ewers and two birds facing inwards. Between them are several flowers and eight-pointed star motifs. Two more birds appear above the ewer spouts. Above these is a stylized rifle and an upside-down tank embellished with another rifle, and rows of blossoms. There are many filler motifs including blossoms and star motifs. A row of five rifles in different colours marks the midline of the centrefield. The same design is symmetrically repeated at the other end. The rug has dark brown selvedges and natural cream wool fringes.
NarrativeThis rug is a variation on a traditional design that features a symmetrical arrangement of ewers, birds, tanks and AK-47s. Traditionally ewers holding water are used to cleanse hands before a meal. They are a symbol of gracious hospitality at odds with the surrounding military motifs.
