DescriptionThis rug features a figured red ground centrefield and a narrow border. The centre is dominated by a crude rendition of President Mohammad Najibullah Ahmadzai, his head held by a large hand extending down from the north. He is positioned on top of a map of Afghanistan, in green-brown. The area around the map is red. There is a grenade and a rifle in the bottom left hand side, a rocket launcher in the upper left and a loaded vehicle above the initials USSR in the upper right. The border consists of a meandering pattern of red and green flowers surrounded by a narrow red guard stripe. The selvedges are natural brown wool. The ends are finished with a plain-woven band in natural brown and white cotton fringes.
NarrativeIn 2006 Robert Fyke collaborated on an exhibition of war rugs at The Nickle Arts Museum called "Made in Afghanistan: Rugs and Resistance, 1979-2005". We chose to examine the development of war rugs borrowing selected examples to complement our scheme. One of the rugs that Rob's collection did not have was Najibullah—a rug we believed was commonly known and traded. In the fall of 2005, Rob wrote to his Peshawar rug dealer friend and drew a quick sketch of the rug he had in mind. Two years later, this bizarre, thumb-nail sketch of a rug arrived in Calgary.
