| Description | This rug has a cityscape centrefield and a geometric border. The centrefield features a street scene in Herat. It illustrates a mosque complex with several stacked towers and a row of vehicles. The sky above the towers is divided into three vertical sections: the outermost two are light brown; the central one is dark brown. A horizontal zigzag line separates these from a blue band embellished with a row of red and orange fighter jets. Below the vehicles are two rows of bushes, the topmost red, and the bottommost orange, both on a blue ground. The border has a hooked meander design in blue on a red ground. The ends are plain-woven in natural cream and brown wool, with natural wool fringes. The selvedges are red wool. |
| Narrative | The Great Mosque of Herat (Masjid-i Jami) is a large, congregational mosque in Herat, a city in western Afghanistan. It was built on the site of earlier mosques from about 1200 AD and has been added to and restored frequently since then. Boxy, perhaps Soviet-style vehicles line the road in front of the mosque, while jets fill the skies. |
