DescriptionThis rug has a red ground and features a colourful, provincial map of Afghanistan. Each province is a different colour and contains an inscription in English and Farsi. Other inscriptions surround the map indicating surrounding countries. The bottom right hand side has a flowering plant in a pot, immediately above that is a medallion-- possibly the Afghan coat of arms. Along the left hand side are three octagons interspersed with trees. Each octagon contains an architectural structure-- possibly a mosque with a minaret and rows of prayer carpets/ niches. There are two narrow borders: the innermost features an interlocking S/Z shapes in red and tan on black; the second, outermost border is a row of angular P shapes in red on black. The selvedges are black wool and the ends are plain-woven with natural cream wool fringes.
NarrativeThis woven map of Afghanistan shows the provincial boundaries. At the top (right hand side) of the rug is a symbol that may represent the Afghan Coat of Arms.
