| Description | This rug has a compartmentalized centrefield and multiple narrow borders. The centrefield is divided into twenty-four (eight rows by three columns) compartments with two geometric designs arranged like a checkerboard. The designs are in brown and peach on a blue ground. There are a variety of filler motifs including small birds, eight-pointed stars, and flowers. There are five narrow borders with repeating, geometric designs, the outer two and middle have blue grounds, and the alternate two have peach grounds. The selvedges are brown wool and the ends are finished with a band of dark blue plain weave with a peach coloured zigzag design worked in weft substitution. |
| Narrative | This rug was woven by Baluch weavers in a region known as Zakni or Zakini between Herat and Farah in western Afghanistan. A precursor to war rugs, it features the repetitive, geometric patterning common among tribal weavers. |
