DescriptionThis rug has a figured cream centrefield and red borders. The centrefield features a red map of Afghanistan with the ‘Friendship Bridge' protruding from it towards the upper left hand corner. On the black bridge are three, three-wheeled vehicles departing Afghanistan. Below the map are three tanks, two grenades, two grenade launchers, an assault rifle, several inscriptions and a vertical row of four X's. The upper right hand corner features three helicopters and a tank as well as several inscriptions. To the left of the bridge are another assault rifle and the flag of Afghanistan. On the map are four helicopters, three tanks, a shot-down jet (with the hit marked in red) and the words 'Afghanis', 'Long Life' and 'Tanks'. The border features a white zigzag on a black and red ground and is not the same width on all four sides. The selvedges are brown wool and the ends have white cotton fringes.
NarrativeThis rug commemorates the departure of Soviet forces from Afghanistan. On the "Friendship Bridge", heading north, are three Soviet BTR 60A Armoured Personnel Carriers. On the bloody red map of Afghanistan are what appear to be Soviet Mil Mi-24 Helicopters (aka Hind) with three Mil Mi-28 Helicopters (aka Havoc) in the air above the map. The rug also features AK-47s, several grenades, and two RPG 7V Grenade Launchers. The inscription refers to the departure of the Soviets.
