	Eight Tank Rug Title Eight Tank Rug Subject War rugs--Afghanistan--History--20th century ; War rugs--Afghanistan--History--21st century ; Afghanistan--Social life and customs ; Tanks Description This rug has a figured centrefield and a patterned border. The centre features two vertical rows of four tanks on a tan ground. Around these are many filler motifs including sideways S and flowers. The border consists of four narrow bands with repeated S motifs in light brown on a dark blue ground. The rug has natural brown wool selvedges. The top end has a plain-woven band with a knotted edge and a short fringe. The bottom end has only a short wool fringe. Narrative This rug features vertical rows of Soviet BTR60 Armoured Personnel Carriers with an intricate border. Woven by Baluch weavers, it has much in common with traditional designs. The repetition of motifs on these rugs and their simplification suggests their possible role as aids for the recognition of weapons.
