Photo DescriptionLeaving Churchill, Manitoba on February 4, the men of Muskox got their last glimpse of the port's sparse spruce trees as they headed north for their first objective -- Eskimo Bay. A distance of 210 miles they expect to make in 4 days. Snow and ice over which the snowmobile, pictured above in this official Canadian Army photo, is travelling, is all the moving force will see as they cover a frozen route which never before has felt the crunch of machines. The expedition -- in which Army, Navy, and Air Force and civilian observers are cooperating -- is designed to test equipment and clothing in sub-zero temperatures; problems of air supply and navigation. From a landing strip at Baker Lake, headquarters of the base force, R.C.A.F. Dakotas and Norsemen will take off to supply the small moving force as Exercise Muskox pushes its way three hundred miles beyond the Arctic Circle. Wing tip of one of these planes appears ar the right.
