Snowmobiles on ice
Snowmobiles on ice
TitleSnowmobiles on ice
ExpeditionExercise Muskox
AuthorCanada. Canadian Army
Photo IDAINA-53-9
Photo DescriptionThis photograph shows a snowmobile of Exercise Muskox on a last practice scheme before leaving Churchill, Manitoba, as it crunches along over the ice, just before it crashed through. Crews worked many hours, cables broke and ropes snapped. The heavy machine stubbornly resisted their attempts to retrieve it from the ragged ice and not until two o'clock the following morning did they succeed in bringing it back to camp. The hummock in the right of the picture is caused by pressure which forces ice into piles of trouble the men of Exercise Muskox must surmount on their 3100 mile trek over the uncharted mysteries of Canada's Arctic regions.
