Photo IDAINA-53-7 / 91(08): (*440) [1946-Exercise Muskox]
Photo DescriptionWith the thermometer holding a steady 33 below zero, forty-eight members of Expedition Muskox recently held a test run and spent their first night in the open. Members of the expedition, which consists of soldiers, will push off from Churchill, Manitoba, on 14 February, cross the Arctic Circle and end up at Edmonton, Alberta, 81 days later. The snow huts, which replace the specially built nylon tents when the temperature is too low, are constructed drom frozen snow and are patterned after the Inuit type of home. Large pieces of snow are cut with a knife or saw and placed on top of each other until the hut is completed. Inside the huts the sleepers are comfortable, protected by down-filled sleeping bags from which only their noses protrude while a small kerosene stove keeps them temperature between zero and ten or twelve degrees above zero. Pictured is Lieutenant Pat Nasmyth of Vanvouver, radar officer, chinking small openings in the finished hut. Gordon Watson, engineer from the Canadian armament, Research and Development establishment, is standing in a trench from which first snow slabs were cut and which now leads to the door.
